Hidden Henley

My subject this Friday is such that anyone interested really does need to spot this subject for themselves since my picture does not give the correct impression of size. This narrow door can be found between what was The Red Lion hotel and what was the Little White Hart hotel on Riverside in our town with hundreds of people passing it by daily without giving it a second glance!

Back in 2017 when I hosted a Hidden Henley walk this peculiarity resulted in much discussion. It seems that the most likely explanation is that this door which is too narrow for normal use was once an access for an area to store fishing tackle when the adjoining occupants had a problem in their relationship – the man was an angling fanatic yet his wife hated what she considered to be smelly fishing gear, and so it was banished to this prime river front location. Since it’s private property, I have no way of knowing what it’s used for today or if the story is true but perhaps someone knowledgeable will let me know.
