Built in the mid 19th century, The Five Horseshoes at Remenham Hill closed some time ago and has since been a commercial property with several different businesses. It’s sadly now unoccupied (at least, I think it’s empty!) yet the old pub sign seen in my picture still survives.
Some that are reading this will remember in the past that as you ascended White Hill and the front of the public house came into view, there was the curious sight of the front part of a racing rowing boat fixed to the building and protruding out over the entrance. I’m unable to locate any photographs that show this nor am I able to explain its significance. Looking back through local history information available on-line there are regular mentions and even promotions for the pub which emphasise its accommodation service. Perhaps it specialised in rooms for Henley Royal Regatta crews? Can anyone help with this? And what happened to the unique eye-catching decoration on the front – where is it now?
